Care for the future

The problem:
Chestnut Moth Invasion

Many people are unaware of how severe this issue is.

Key questions remain unanswered:

Should we consider replacing some trees with more resistant species?

Before making decisions, we need to
understand the scale of the problem.

The Importance of Chestnut Trees

  • Preserving Ecology – Chestnut trees are crucial to ecosystems, supporting local flora and fauna.
  • Economic Interest – Chestnuts are valuable for agriculture, consumer goods, and other industries.
  • Cultural Significance – In many regions, chestnuts hold deep cultural and traditional value.

The solution:
Pheromone Traps

1. Attract pests

Male moths are drawn into the trap.

2. Reduce reproduction

Trapped males can’t mate, which decreases the population.

3. Enable monitoring & prevention

Helps track pest activity and stop infestations before they escalate.

How to Make
a Pheromone Trap

Materials Needed:

Pheromones for chestnut moths, available online or in specialty stores.
Wiring or ties – for hanging the trap.
Waterproof – glue to withstand weather conditions.
Blade or scissors – for cutting the trap.
Black/dark-colored paint, optional, but increases attraction

Prepare the Box:

Cut holes in the sides to allow moths to enter. Place holes where pests are expected to come from.

Paint the Trap (Optional):

Use black or dark paint to enhance contrast and attract pests.

Install the Pheromone:

Hang the pheromone inside the box as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Apply Glue:

Add glue at the bottom and around the openings to trap insects.

Hang the Trap:

Select a sturdy chestnut tree and hang the trap 1.5 – 2 meters high.

Regularly Check the Trap:

Monitor effectiveness and replace pheromones when necessary.

Why This Matters

Setting up pheromone traps helps us track and understand chestnut moth populations. This allows us to:

Monitor the health of chestnut trees in urban areas.

Take necessary action in collaboration with local authorities and specialists.

Educate the community on sustainable solutions.

Next Steps:
Saving Our Chestnuts

Let’s take action today to protect our chestnut trees and secure their future! Once the traps provide data, we can:

  • Analyze pest dynamics and impact.
  • Work with local authorities and experts for further action.
  • Raise awareness about chestnut tree preservation.
